Slugtown are pleased to present Eyes on the Prize?, a new solo exhibition from Glasgow based artist Tulani Hlalo.

In Eyes on the Prize?, Hlalo continues her exploration into the highly staged world of competitive dog grooming, in which dogs are groomed into elaborate sculptural objects – including other animals, cartoons and objects.  Her research into this raises questions about consent, expectation, and the representation of identity.  These inform Hlalo’s ongoing interest into the slipperiness of identity, belonging, and of “being inbetween cultures”.

Tulani Hlalo (b. 1994, Newcastle upon Tyne) lives and works in Glasgow.  Recent solo exhibitions include: Trophy Room, CCA Glasgow Intermedia Gallery, Glasgow, UK (solo); In My Defence, Gasleak Mountain, Nottingham, UK (solo); EXTREME COMPETITIVE, Almanac Inn, Turin, IT (solo); Thanks Dad, OUTPOST Gallery, Norwich, UK.  Recent group exhibitions include: Baggage Claim, Staffordshire Street, London, UK; The Sound of a Falling Tree, Tuesday to Friday, Valencia, ES; Fertile Ground, Longsight Art Space, Manchester, UK; No Place Like Home, La Junqueria, Lisbon, PT; EYECATCHER V, Focalpoint Gallery, Southend on Sea, UK.   Hlalo has also undertaken residencies at ArcadeCampfa and Joya: arte + ecologia, as well as winning the Manchester School of Art Alumni Prize.
